Harold William Gibhardt, 84, of Holden Beach, NC formerly of High Point, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 6, 2016 in the Southport Nursing Center.
Born in High Point, NC, on February 17, 1932, he was a son of the late Frederick William Gibhardt of Hamburg, Germany and Lena Faye Hedrick of Thomasville, NC. Harold graduated from High Point Central High School where he was a star athlete, lettering in several sports, and sang in the chorus. He attended High Point College for one year and subsequently began a 43-year career at Alderman Studios in High Point.
After college he married the love of his life, Carolyn Jeanne Morris on October 4, 1952. While dating Carolyn, Harold joined Green Street Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member for nearly thirty years, singing in the choir, working with the Boy Scout troop, and participating on various sports teams.
Harold was proud of his participation in the US Army, joining in January of 1953, and served as an MP in Korea during 1953/1954.
Honorably discharged in 1954 he resumed his career at Alderman Studios, working first as a lab technician, and eventually training as a commercial photographer. During his long career, Harold earned his Master's Degree in Photography, held management positions in the company, and helped develop the commercial photography program at Randolph Technical College-still considered one of the finest programs in the industry. He also served as a juror for the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).
Harold also coached various sports teams at the YMCA and played on various secular leagues. For the remainder of his life, he was an avid sportsman, playing and coaching softball, basketball, and pursuing his hunting, fishing, and golf interests.
A strong believer in civic participation, Harold was on the Uwharrie Council for the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the High Point Wisemen's Club. He also helped when needed in various projects for the High Point ARC, local law enforcement agencies, and later, Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Brunswick County.
In 1995 Harold and Carolyn retired to Holden Beach, North Carolina in Brunswick County. Being an avid golfer since high school, Harold settled the couple in a home in the Lockwood Folly golf community in 1998. He remained an active participant, playing on the traveling team, until poor health forced him to "retire his golf clubs" in 2010.
During his twenty-one year residence in Brunswick County, Harold was a faithful member of the Holden Beach Chapel, where he served on the church board of directors and sang in the choir. During this time, he also sang in the C-Notes, a professional choir headquartered in Southport, NC.
Over a period of the last six years, Harold and Carolyn both had been in declining physical health, Harold being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2013. For the past ten months, Harold was a resident of the Southport Nursing Center (formerly Dosher) in Southport, NC. In July of 2016, Carolyn joined him as a full-time resident of the facility. On Tuesday October 4, the couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Two days later on October 6, Harold passed away peacefully in his sleep with Carolyn at his side.
Surviving are his loving wife of sixty four years, Carolyn Gibhardt; their children, Marcie Showman and husband, Jimmy of Jacksonville, NC, their two children and one great grandchild. (2 more soon!); Bill Gibhardt and wife, Kerry of High Point, NC, their two children; Liza Gibhardt of Virginia Beach, VA and a brother-in-law: David Morris of High Point, NC
A celebration of Harold's life will be held at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the Holden Beach Chapel. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
